Jacob Friedrich Bauer, Christina Magdalena Rau and Their Children at Vaihingen
Jacob Friedrich Bauer and Christina Magdalena Rau
Jacob Friedrich Bauer, Fredericka’s father, was born at Vaihingen an der Enz at three in the morning on 16 March 1816. He was baptized there on 18 March, the son of the citizen and shoemaker Michael Bauer and Rosina Barbara Würth. He was nine when his father died and twenty when he lost his mother. In America he went by Frederick.
Christina Magdalena Rau was born at Enzweihingen on 13 February 1821 and baptized the next day, the daughter of the citizen and farmer Johann Wendel Rau and Friederika Büchele. She was eleven when her father died. She was one of nine children, several of whom died young.

Jacob Friedrich and Christina married at Vaihingen on 29 October 1843. The entry places his family at Vaihingen and hers at Enzweihingen. It calls him single and a brush maker and names both fathers as dead: Michael Bauer, citizen and shoemaker, and Johann Wendel Rau, citizen and farmer at Enzweihingen. The banns were read in both places, and the deacon Rüst married them. Their first child was born seven months later.
Fredericka and Her Brothers and Sisters at Vaihingen, 1844 to 1854
Fredericka was born at Vaihingen an der Enz at half past twelve at night on 23 May 1844. Three days later, on 26 May, the deacon Rüst baptized her Marie Friderike Karoline Bauer (indexed as Maria Friederike Karolina). Three godmothers stood for her, one of them from Stuttgart. The entry gives her father as a citizen; his trade cannot be read.
That the Fredericka Bauer who married George Wesemann was this child is proved. A family genealogist showed it in 2016 from records on both sides of the ocean. Fredericka’s death certificate gives the birth date of this baptism. Her brother Frederick’s death certificate matches his own Vaihingen baptism and names his mother as “Mrs. Rau.” And her marriage entry of 1866 gives her home as Vaihingen in Württemberg.
The Vaihingen family register lists six children born to Jacob Friedrich and Christina in Germany, and a seventh was born in Pennsylvania.

Three of the babies died of convulsions within months of their births. Christina Rieger, an unmarried woman, stood godmother at the baptisms of 1846 to 1851, and Maria Müller, the wife of a Müller of Stuttgart, at those of 1846 to 1848. Neither is said to be kin.
