Philadelphia and Wayne, 1903 to 1944
The family grew within weeks of landing. A daughter, Filomena, called Philomena, was born at Philadelphia on 24 October 1903, six weeks after the Roma docked. The city’s birth return names her parents as Alexandro “Sequitiere” and “Filomenina”. Her mother must have been carrying her on the crossing.
In 1906 the family lived at 1143 Titan Street, when Alexandro signed his daughter Maria Grazia’s marriage consent with a mark. Luigi, called Louis, was born on 7 March 1907. In 1910 the household was in Philadelphia’s 26th Ward, in South Philadelphia: Alexandro, 48, Filomena, 44, and Ralph, 19, Emilio, 17, Joseph, 14, Salvatore, 10, Philomena, 7, and Louis, 3. Alexandro had been out of work for fourteen weeks in 1909, and Filomena told the census taker that she had borne eight children, seven of them living. The ward lay in the Italian settlement of South Philadelphia. By 1920 it held most of the city’s 136,793 Italian-born residents and their children, and its people worked chiefly in construction, on the railroads and in the clothing trades.
Alexandro’s sister probably lived nearby. Filomena Squitiere was born in Italy on 27 October 1865 and married Salvatore Morziello. As his widow, Filomena Morziello, she kept house at 2316 South 17th Street. She died at Methodist Hospital on 12 August 1942 and was buried at Holy Cross. Her death certificate names her parents as Ralph Squitiere and “Grace Orsa”. Their names match Alexandro’s parents, so she was probably his younger sister. The records of her children, the 1917 marriage of Anna L. Morziello to Charles Petti and the birth of Alexander Morziello on 31 January 1906, give their mother’s surname as “Scutaro” and “Sgrittille,” probably clerks’ attempts at Squitiere.
By 1918 the family had moved to Wayne, in Radnor Township, Delaware County, and lived at 324 West Lancaster Avenue. In January 1920 the household held Alexandro, 58, and Filomena, 54; their sons Ralph, a widower, Emil, Joseph and Salvatore; Philomena and Louis; Emil’s young wife, Rose; and Ralph’s son, Ralph, 5. In 1930 Alexandro and Filomena were still at Wayne with their son Joseph and their grandson Ralph.
Alexandro died at home on Conestoga Road, Wayne, on 18 December 1930, of cancer of the bladder. His death certificate calls him a stone mason and names his parents as Ralph Squitiere and Grace Orizio (a doubtful reading); the informant was Grace Squitiere. He was buried on 22 December at Saint Denis Cemetery, Havertown.
Filomena lived on with her sons. In 1940, at 74, she was in Joseph’s house, at 114 Conestoga Road, in the Wayne–Strafford part of Radnor Township. Her son Louis and his family lived there too, and they had all been in the same house in 1935. She died at 114 Conestoga Road, Wayne, on 3 October 1944, of a cerebral hemorrhage. Her death certificate names her parents as Luigi Giugliano and Antonia Costerno (a doubtful reading), and the informant was her son Joseph. She was buried beside her husband at Saint Denis on 6 October.
Emil’s Brothers and Sisters
Maria Grazia married Raffaele Pizzi at Philadelphia on 21 August 1906. He was probably Ralph Victor Pizzi, born in Italy on 24 March 1884, possibly at Palombaro, in the province of Chieti. He registered for the Second World War draft at Wayne and was naturalized in 1945. A Philadelphia birth return names a child of “Raffaelo” Pizzi and “Mariagrazie” Squitiere. The censuses probably show the family in the 26th Ward in 1910, with their sons Anthony and Achille. In 1920 they had Achille, Peter, Anthony, Alexander and Nicholas, and at Wayne in 1930 an Anna and a Rita as well, though the indexes do not say how they were related. In 1940 they lived at Radnor. A family tree gives the five sons as Anthony Onofrio (1908 to 1997), Achille Joseph (1909 to 1956), Alexander John (1912 to 1959), Peter John (1914 to 1983) and Nicholas John (1916 to 1986). In April 1929 an “R. Pizzi” of Lancaster Pike, Devon, probably Ralph, ran his business card among the Wayne trade cards in the local paper. Ralph Victor Pizzi probably died or was buried on 20 October 1949, at Calvary Cemetery, West Conshohocken. In 1950 Maria Grazia, a widow of 61 entered as Mary Pizzi, lived at Radnor with her son Nicholas, 33, an auto mechanic, his wife, Philomena, and their daughter. Maria Grazia died at Bryn Mawr Hospital on 14 May 1953 after a gallbladder operation. Her death certificate names her father as Alexander Squitiere; Nicholas gave the information. She was buried at Calvary Cemetery on 18 May.
Raffaele, called Ralph, married Alessandra (“Santa”) Varrenti at Philadelphia on 15 December 1913, when she lived at 915 Dickinson Street. She had been born on 1 November 1892 at Archi, in the province of Chieti, the daughter of Nicola Varrenti and Maria Siralli. Their son, Ralph A. Squitiere, was born on 3 November 1914. Two days later, on 5 November, Alessandra died at St. Agnes Hospital, aged 22, of eclampsia brought on by the pregnancy. The family then lived at 1814 South Mole Street, and her husband gave the information. She was buried at Holy Cross Cemetery. On 10 May 1915 Ralph married Philomena Martino, 17, born on 2 May 1898, who lived at 1032 Washington Avenue with her father, Angelo Martino, a laborer born in Italy; her mother, Margaret Sgro, had died. The marriage index names Ralph’s parents as “Allesandro” and Filomena “Giviano”. A 1916 listing of Catholic marriages at St. Thomas Aquinas under Ralph’s name is possibly the church record of this marriage. By January 1920 Ralph was a widower in his parents’ household, so Philomena possibly died between 1915 and 1920.
Ralph’s infant son grew up with his grandparents. He was in their household at 5 in 1920 and at 15 in 1930. Ralph A. Squitiere died at Philadelphia on 17 October 2007.
Ralph himself probably married Viola Marie Tasca in 1929. In 1940, in the 26th Ward, he lived with Viola, 30, born in Rhode Island, and their three children, aged 9, 6 and 5. In 1950 he was a tailor in a department store and lived with Viola and two of the children. His Social Security record names his wife, Viola Tasca, and a son. His draft cards of both world wars give his birth as 27 May 1891, the date of his Sarno birth act. Ralph died at home, at 2938 South 16th Street, on 12 September 1956, of cancer of the stomach. His death certificate calls him a tailor born at “Naples” and names his parents as “Alexander Squitieri” and Philomena. One of his daughters gave the information, and he was buried on 17 September at Holy Cross Cemetery, Yeadon, in Section V.
Giuseppe, called Joseph Aloysius Squitiere, registered for the draft in Delaware County on 12 September 1918. He gave his home as 324 West Lancaster Avenue, Wayne, and his work, by the likeliest reading, as a “trouble repairman” for the Keystone Telephone Company at Preston and Market Streets in Philadelphia. His nearest relative was his father, at the same address. Keystone was Philadelphia’s independent telephone company, Bell’s rival from 1900 until Bell bought it in 1944. Joseph lived with his parents in 1910, 1920 and 1930, and in 1940 he headed the Wayne household in which his widowed mother lived. He married twice. He was single at home in January 1920, and his first marriage ended in divorce in the Delaware County Court of Common Pleas in September 1924 (No. 922), for desertion. A divorce for desertion then required two years’ absence, so that marriage fell between 1920 and about 1922. His first wife is not named, and in 1930 he was entered as divorced. In 1940 he was an electrician at a shipyard. On 19 September 1942 he married Anna Di Piero before a magistrate. The application, filed on the 16th, gives him as an electrician at 114 Conestoga Road, Wayne, and Anna as a dressmaker at 1814 Ritner Street, born on 10 March 1909 at Chieti. The marriage index names his parents as Alexander Squitiere and Philomena “Castordo,” and hers as Frank Di Piero and Rose Torrente Di Piero. Joseph died in May 1979 in Delaware County and is buried at Saint Denis Cemetery, with his parents. Anna died on 12 October 2005. A Joseph M. Squitiere, buried at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery and recorded as a son of Joseph A. and Anna, is probably their son and Alexandro’s grandson.
Salvatore registered for the draft in Delaware County in 1918. He gave his birth as 4 June 1900, his home as 324 West Lancaster Avenue, Wayne, and his work as a laborer for Seeds & Derham at Germantown; his nearest relative was “Felemonia Squitiere (Mother)”. He was in his parents’ household in 1910 and 1920. On 29 September 1924 he married Catherine Albero, born on 18 October 1903, the daughter of Michael and Josephine Albero. He then lived at 924 Lancaster Avenue, Wayne, and she at 2037 Morris Street; the index names his mother as “Philima” Squitiere. In 1930 the couple rented on South Lambert Street, Philadelphia, with their daughter Philomena, and Salvatore was a presser in the clothing trade. Salvatore died in November 1974 in Montgomery County, and he and Catherine (1903 to 1963) are buried at Saints Peter & Paul Cemetery, Springfield.
| Child | Birth | Death | Married |
|---|---|---|---|
| Philomena | about 1926 | ||
| Anna C. | 31 July 1935, Philadelphia | 21 February 2025, Philadelphia | Albert A. Rossi |
| Josephine Antoinette (probably) | 8 August 1940 | October 1986 | a Massetti |
Anna’s obituary names her parents as “the late Salvatore and Catherine (née Albero) Squitiere,” her late husband, Albert A. Rossi, and her three children. Her husband is not the Albert Rossi who appears later in this chapter.
Philomena, born in Philadelphia in 1903, married Michael Capriola, born in Italy on 17 May 1896. In 1930 they lived at Radnor with five sons, Ralph, Daniel, Michael, Alexander and Anthony. In 1940, at St. Davids, in Radnor Township, they had eight children, among them Daniel, Anthony, Alexander, Ralph and Michael. In 1950 they lived in Tredyffrin Township, Chester County. Michael registered for the draft at Wayne in 1942 and died in November 1964. The obituary of their son Michael J. Capriola, Jr. (1930 to 2009) names his parents as Michael Capriola and “Philomena Squiterie” Capriola, and his brothers and sisters, among them Alexander, Daniel, Anthony and Ralph. His brother Daniel’s obituary gives their mother as “Philomena Squitieri Capriolo”. Philomena died in September 1973.
Louis (Luigi), the youngest, was a musician as a young man. In November 1926, aged nineteen, he was listed among the members of the Main Line Orchestra, conducted by Adolph Vogel, which opened its season with a concert at the Ardmore on Sunday, 14 November. In April 1929, Louis, of 324 West Lancaster Avenue, Wayne, gave notice in the Suburban and Wayne Times that his wife, Rose, had left him and that he would pay no bills she ran up. They were together again by 1935. In 1940 Louis, Rose and their children, Florence, 11, and Alexander, 9, lived in Joseph’s house at Wayne with his mother. Louis was then a painting contractor on his own account, with twenty-eight weeks’ work in the year. His draft card of 1940 names his employer as David Silvert of Bryn Mawr and shows an earlier Rosemont address crossed out. In 1950, in Delaware County, Louis, 42, and Rose, 39, lived with their son, Alexander, 19, their daughter, Florence, 21, and her husband, Anthony Cellucci, 24. Louis died in December 1968. Rose, born on 15 April 1911, died on 7 June 1999. She was Louis’s wife, not Emil’s first wife.
Their daughter, Florence T. Squitiere, died in 2014. Her husband, Anthony A. Cellucci, died at Rosemont on 30 July 2008, and his obituary names their six children. Their son, Alexander A. Squitiere (1930 to 1988), married Margaret Grace (“Peggy”) Liberato (1932 to 2012), and both are buried at Philadelphia Memorial Park, Frazer, in Chester County. Their son, Alexander Anthony Squitiere, Jr., was born at Bryn Mawr in 1955 and died at Malvern in 2022; his obituary names both parents.
